![]() ![]() The children at his school were able to take power of their own lives. ![]() Neill’s main purpose of his existentialistic philosophy was to create an environment where children were able to grow freely. The purpose of this type of environment is to have the students “ accept personal responsibility to understand deeply and be at peace with one’s own unique individuality”. An existential classroom is one in which “students choose their preferred medium- such as poetry, prose or painting- and evaluate their own performance”. In 1921 he created the Summerhill School so he could effectively practice his existentialistic philosophy. He didn’t conform to the popular moral and intellectual standards of the time instead he believed that there should be a focus on social and character development. He believed that individuals had the ability to direct their own learning and it was their right to do so. ![]() Alexander Sutherland Neill (1883-1973) believed in the philosophy of existentialism. ![]()
